Shine Like An Emerald – How to Best Wear the Color of the Year

Is it just me, or should Rihanna re-sing “Shine Like a Diamond” next year so that it’s “Shine Like an Emerald?”

Anyways, Emerald is 2013’s color of the year and it’s time to start incorporating the gem into your wardrobe. However, green may seem like a weird color to work with and you might be asking yourself questions like: “What colors does it go best with?” “How do I avoid clashing colors?” “I don’t usually wear green, so how do I incorporate it into my closet?”

If you are actually asking yourself these questions, no worries, because that’s the point of this post: to help you embrace your inner gemstone and work the color of the year.

But first, below are some great emerald picks to add to your closet, house, and beauty and jewelry collection:

Emerald City

Clockwise, from left to right: Disco Nights Dress from NastyGal, Green Circles Lamp (perfect way to add some color to a room!), 7 For All Mankind Jeans, Illamasqua nail varnish in Viridian, MAKE UP FOR EVER Pure Pigments in No. 18, Emerald Green, Emerald Drop Earrings from BaubleBar (these definitely look more than $32, right?), Coach Zoee heel, La Mer Collections WatchTealight Holder, Terry towels from Brooks Brothers.

Believe it or not, emerald is a simple color to work with if you’re not afraid of green.

Dressing Up With Emerald

Outfit #1: Emerald Dress from ModCloth — Gold-collared jacket, Bib necklace, Anne Klein Cap-toed heels

  • This gemstone looks utterly chic when paired with gold (currently my favorite color combo), so have fun and add some gold to your outfit whether it’s with the great gold-collored jacket above, or with gold accessories. For some color, add pinks, blue, purples, or reds.

Outfit #2: Skater Dress from Nordstrom — Juicy Couture fur coat, Cobalt drop earrings, Pink Crystal Cluster ring, Oscar de la Renta ring, Steve Madden pumps

  • Emerald is beautiful when paired with shades of  pink. It’s a great color combination and always looks great together. Add in some blue for a pop of color if you’re up for it, otherwise play with pinks and emeralds.

For a more simple approach to emerald, pick up an emerald sweater or top and have fun with all the accessories:

Outfit pieces: Cashmere Crewneck Sweater, TopShop Skinny Jeans, Aldo blue booties

Here’s to looking great in emerald in the new year!

Step Into Paige Denim

If I had to choose one brand of denim that I’m currently obsessed with, it would have to be Paige Denim.

The Los Angeles-based company began in 2004 and since then, has moved its way up in the designer jean world among Hudson Jeans, 7 for all Mankind Jeans, and the like. Paige Denim marries wonderful fabric with impeccable style for a result of beautiful, stylish, and comfortable jeans. What more could a fashion-forward, jean-loving girl want?

Personally, I love all of Paige’s jeans, but these are just a few of my favorites:

Paige Denim Favorites

Above, from left to right:

  1. Skyline Ankle Peg jeans – 1 of 3 Paige jeans exclusive to ShopBop
  2. Polka Dot Verdugo Skinnies – My current favorite.
  3. Moonlight Print Verdugo Ultra Skinnies – Super artsy for a pair of jeans, don’t you think? But they’re absolutely gorgeous.
  4. Emerald Edgemont Ultra Skinnies – These are necessary because, hello, the 2013 color of the year is emerald! And the double zippers in front are a great accent.

Shopbop carries Paige Denim, including three jeans created exclusively for the online fashion retailer. You can check out the Resort 2013 LookBook on ShopBop here.

The Hottest Party Dresses for the Holidays

You can’t complete the holiday season without great holiday parties with friends and family. And what would a great party be without a great dress on you? Everyone knows that your must-have for any holiday party is — besides your glistening smile — the perfect dress. To save you some time from dress shopping when you should be gift shopping (for someone else, not yourself), I’ve gathered the hottest holiday party dresses from your favorite stores that you need to be wearing this holiday season.

Velvet and sequins are must-haves for the holidays, hence, they’re perfect for those New Year parties you’ve been invited to. Plus, velvet is totally in style right now, so that velvet dress you decide to splurge on will do you some good for the rest of the season.

Nasty Gal Holiday Dresses
NastyGal is a great place online for the most unique clothing that you definitely won’t be able to find anywhere else. Take a look at my top picks from the hot online retailer above.
Nordstrom Holiday Dresses

From left to right: Ruched Tank Dress, Sequin Dress, Mesh Bodycon Dress , Metallic Lace Peplum dress

We all know and love Nordstrom. Above are my top picks from the fashion-forward department store. My favorite is the blue mesh bodycon dress. It’s not only perfect for a holiday party, but is great at any other time of the year. A peplum dress (far left) is also a must-have, whether it’s filled with sequins or lace. It’s a universally flattering silhouette and is a must for your closet.

When looking for a great outfit piece, or holiday dress in this case, for a great price, Forever21 is always the go-to store. The high neck sheath dress (second from right) is a great dress for the workplace holiday event. Gold is a hot fall trend and is perfect for the holidays if you want to shine in something other than sequins. The metallic velveteen dress above (middle) combines two of fall’s hot trends — gold and velvet — to create a fun dress made to dance in.

Charlotte Russe Accessories

From left to right: Accessory/Shoe #1, Accessory/Shoe #2, Accessory/Shoe #3

What’s a great outfit without accessories and heels to complete the look? Charlotte Russe has a great selection of well-priced accessories and shoes worth taking a look at. Below are some ideas for what accessory/shoe pair above goes great with your holiday dress.:

  1. For a dress with minimal sparkle and more texture (think metallics, velvet, or dresses with embellishments), wear a great bootie to add some personality to your outfit. The velvet bootie pictured above is a great find at Charlotte Russe to add personality to any outfit, whether it’s paired with a party dress or jeans. The glitter bar earrings and the rhinestone bracelet in a muted color add sparkle to your outfit without taking away from your dress.
  2. If you’re opting for a more low-key dress that doesn’t have a lot of sparkle or shine, let your shoes and accessories do the talking. Have fun with your heels and choose a sparkly Mary-Jane for some sophistication and sparkle with your jewelry. Wear your favorite statement necklace like the one pictured above (Stone statement necklace) and a sparkly ring (above: sparkly rhinestone ring).
  3. The last accessory/shoe look is perfect if you’re dressing in a sparkly/sequined/metallic dress. Your dress should be the star of the show while your shoes and accessories support it. Choose a suede pump like the one pictured above on the far right (found here at Charlotte Russe) and pair it with a simple bracelet and studs of your choice (pictured above).

H&M Will Recycle Your Clothes

In exchange for your old clothes, Swedish clothier H&M will give you a discount on a future purchase.

H&M is launching a global initiative to encourage shoppers to recycle the clothes they no longer wear instead of throwing them in the trash. The retailer has said that as much as 95% of the clothes people would throw away can be used again.

Beginning in February 2013, customers will be able to bring in used clothing from any brand and H&M will accept clothing in “any condition,” according to the LA  Times. In return for your used clothing, you’ll receive a voucher for a future purchase. So basically, feel good about recycling your clothing, come back to H&M to buy more clothes and use your voucher, and recycle more clothes.

H&M is partnering with a global recycling company, I:Collect, who will then handle the recycled clothes at a sorting plant in Germany. There, the clothing will be separated for re-use for more apparel or for other products such as cleaning rags, padding, and more.

The retailer has said that it’s long-term goal is to “reduce the environmental impact of garments throughout the lifecycle,” as stated in the Los Angeles Times.

Now might be a good time to begin cleaning out your closet to separate the clothes you love and wear from the clothes that you don’t really think you’d wear again.

Emerald Shines as Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year

Emerald has stolen the spotlight in 2013 as Pantone’s Color of the Year.

Every December, color authority Pantone chooses a color to become the upcoming year’s “Color of the Year.” Today, Pantone chose Emerald Green as the “Color of the Year” for 2013.

According to Pantone’s website, Emerald is “Lively. Radiant. Lush … A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”

The radiant color, Pantone 17-5641, has been all over the Spring 2013 runway and will undoubtedly be the hottest color for 2013.

If you don’t have some emerald in your closet already, it might just be time to go shopping and grab some great jewel-toned emerald pieces. Look for great dresses and shoes to keep yourself looking like a gem. It also wouldn’t hurt to add some actual emerald gems to your jewelry collection.

But don’t just stop at clothing. Home decor — my favorite — in emerald is stunning and adds a splash of color to your living place. Unlike last year’s color of the year (Tangerine Tango), Emerald Green is easier on the eyes and is perfect for all seasons so it would be absolutely okay to have emerald plates on your kitchen table all year.

Sephora & Pantone will be launching another color collection focused on emerald that is due to be out early spring 2013. Sign up at Sephora to stay notified on the limited-edition color collection and it’s release date.

I don’t know about you, but I’m most looking forward to emerald green nail polish. Hello, gems on my nails!

You can also find Pantone bedding, bath towels, and accessories in Emerald sold exclusively at JCPenny and online beginning February 1.
