How to Dress Business Casual and Take it From the Workplace to a Night Out

Who said business casual had to be boring?

It’s important to dress right for the office, but if the dress code is business casual, you have a little bit more room to have fun with your outfits.

For those who are still confused about what exactly “business casual” means, think about it this way: it’s the middle ground between formal business wear and every day wear. This means mix up your traditional business pieces with everyday clothing items.

Think dress pants/khakis/pencil skirt with a nice blouse/sweater. Or pair a dress (knee-length!) with a blazer/cardigan.

To make sure you’re dressing appropriately for work, stick to these four guidelines:

  1. Modesty is key. Cover your cleavage and make sure your skirts aren’t too short. If you’d wear your outfit to a party, you definitely shouldn’t wear it to work.
  2. Close-toed shoes are a good idea. If your workplace is more lax, sandals may work. Just make sure your toes and polished and pretty!
  3. Forget anything with logos, rips, and tears to avoid looking sloppy.
  4. Have fun with prints and patterns! Business casual gives you room to play with some color, prints, and patterns. Just don’t overdo it.  A patterned pencil skirt goes great with a solid blouse and a patterned cardigan is a great way to easily add color to your outfit.

To give you an idea on how to dress business casual, I put together an outfit that you can easily take from work to a night out.

For the workplace, add a blazer or cardigan over a tank and replace open-toed heels with closed-toe heels (these nude heels are my favorite) or flats in your favorite color.

For a night out, remove the blazer/cardigan, replace the pants with black jeans or a skirt, and keep the heels.

P.S. If you don’t have one already, invest in a peplum! It’s a flattering wardrobe staple for every body type. Experiment with peplum tops, dresses, and jackets to see which one you love most.

Must-Haves from the 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target Collection

The most anticipated Target designer collaboration is here! Well, not yet, but the look book is. Target’s newest designer collab with 3.1 Phillip Lim is the best everyday-wear collection we’ve seen yet to emerge from the retailer. And it’s definitely worth getting your hands on.

From trench coats, sweaters, work-appropriate dresses, and must-have bags, Phillip Lim’s collection is simple but totally chic.

“This is really personal, because growing up, I was a Target customer. My parents were always taking me to Target for back-to-school shopping, and I would find things, but they were not quite right. This was my chance to go back and relive this and do it right,”  Phillip Lim told T Magazine.

The collection consists of 100 items for both men and women ranging in prices from $19.99 to $299.99 for apparel and $19.99 to $59.99 for accessories.

Lim divided the collection into three wardrobes: morning, noon, and night.

Take a look at my favorite picks below:

Morning Looks:

3.1 Phillip Lim x Target Morning Looks

Look 1: Trench Coat in Khaki/Blue $79.99, Pant in Light Blue $39.99

Arguably the best part of this collab are the bags. They’re well-designed, come in classic colors (black, gray, blue, red), and each is perfect to be your go-to almost “it” bag. The collection even includes a less-pricey version of the coveted Pashli bag.

Beauty Review: Urban Outfitters Nail Polish

I’m always on the hunt for great nail polish.

As someone who can’t and won’t leave her nails naked for more than a couple days, a pretty and lasting nail polish is a must. And if I can find a great polish at a great price, that’s even better.

Luckily, I recently found one of my top choices for nail polishes under $10 at Urban Outfitters.

I stumbled across a pretty polish at UO called Cupcake. Falling somewhere in between salmon and a light pink, this polish is a great pink to have on your nails as summer slowly transitions into fall.

Find my review below:

UO Nail Polish - Cupcake

My Review:

  • The Basics: Urban Outfitters has a collection of UO Nail Polishes ranging from the basics, glitter, and glow-in-the-dark. They’re priced the same (one for $5, or three for $10) so you can happily mix and match between the collections.
  • Hit or Miss? Total Hit
  • Why? UO’s nail polish collections have a very wide range of colors so you can easily find one (or more!) to love. The polishes also have great lasting power; I can wear it for two weeks without a chip in sight! Plus, with a price as good as UO’s, how could you say no?
  • The Bottom Line: You want UO Nail Polishes. At a great price with a wide range of colors that will look great on your nails without chipping, you can’t go wrong.

Have you tried UO Nail Polishes? What’d you think? Share with me in the comments below! Check out another favorite polish of mine and one that I’m not such a fan of

Marc Jacobs Takes on Makeup With Marc Jacobs Beauty

Marc Jacobs is diving into beauty with his first-ever beauty collection: Marc Jacobs Beauty.

Yes, you heard that right. The fashion designer who has taken over the fragrance world is now trying his hand in cosmetics.

Jacobs told WWD:

“I see makeup, fragrance — everything, really — as an opportunity. The idea of choosing a color for your lip, or an eyeliner — it’s just such a delight. The ritual of waking up and making those choices is something people really enjoy.”

And now you can enjoy making these choices even more with Marc Jacobs Beauty products in the mix.

Jacobs’ collection will have 122 products, so discovering your new favorite(s) beauty product(s) should be no problem.

According to Elle, the 100+ products will be placed into four categories:

  • Smart Complexion (foundations, concealer, and powder)
  • Blacquer (eye pen eyeliner, lash lifter, and gel crayon)
  • Hi-Per Color (lip products, blush, eye shadow, bronzer, and nail lacquers)
  • Boy Tested, Girl Approved (unisex products like lip balm, brow gel, and concealer)

You will happily find powder and liquid foundations in what seem like every skin color imaginable, beautiful lip glosses, pigmented compact combinations of eye shadows, and a range of gorgeous nail lacquers that I am personally gushing over.

Can’t wait to see the collection for yourself? You don’t have to! Thankfully, PopSugar has released photos of every single product from Marc Jacobs Beauty, so start feasting your eyes on the products before it launches August 9.

My favorite products from the all-too-chic collection include a beautiful shimmery blue nail polish in Blue VelvetLip Vinyl lip gloss in a perfect pink, and Marc Jacobs Beauty chapstick (because what’s more chic than having Marc Jacobs chapstick?).

You can find Marc Jacobs Beauty at Sephora and select Marc Jacobs stores, available August 9.

Have you found any Marc Jacobs Beauty products that you just can’t wait to get your hands on?

The Royal Baby Has Arrived!

via Flickr

In case you missed it (how could you?), The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, gave birth to a little baby prince on July 22nd!

Though I’m super excited for William and Kate and their new baby boy, I can’t help but be a little disappointed that it’s not a baby girl. I mean, don’t you want to know and comment on all the cute little royal baby dresses the little girl would have worn?!

Anyways, needless to say, I’m excited for 8-pound, 6-ounce bundle of joy and for the royal couple.

In line with royal tradition, the royal couple stepped out of St. Mary’s Hospital’s Lindo Wing in London this morning, cradling their day-old baby for his first public appearance.

And it seem the little prince knew it was his time to shine. As his parents waved to the public, the royal baby joined in and wiggled his fingers to wave as well.

Kate looked absolutely stunning as she stepped out in a baby blue polka-dot Jenny Packham dress. How she looked so great a day after giving birth to greet the world, we have no idea, but would love to know!

“It’s very emotional. It’s such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like,” Kate said.

William chimed in regarding their baby’s hair, “He’s got way more hair than me, thank God.”

Kate also made sure to let the public know that William is ready for fatherhood, having already done “his first nappy,” or changed a diaper. Good work, William!

But what about his name? The Duke and Duchess are still working on that, but for now, his official title will be “His Royal Highness Prince (name) of Cambridge.”

But no worries, there will be a name. William assured the anxious public, “We’ll have that as soon as we can.”

Any guesses for what Kate and William will name their baby?

[Update] July 24: The Duke and Duchess have named their baby George Alexander Louis!
