10 Fashion Essentials You Should Have in Your Closet

As trends come and go, you need fashion essentials that will withstand every season. So go back to basics and make sure you have these 10 pieces in your wardrobe that you’ll wear over and over again, in a million different ways.

Shop my favorites for each fashion essential below for pieces that work with every price range.

1. Black Pumps: What’s a wardrobe without a pair of perfect black pumps? Black pumps are a classic, and they can be your go-to heel when you need it. Find yourself a pair you fall in love with.

2. Tailored Blazer: A blazer may be perfect for work, but it’s also perfect for any other occasion! Throwing on a tailored blazer over your outfit is an easy way to add volume and structure, polishing up your look.  Wear a blazer over a simple t-shirt and jeans, or wear it over a dress.

3. Cardigan: For those days when a blazer seems like a little too much, opt for a cardigan. This simple sweater can easily be thrown on over any outfit. Keep it simple with a solid cardigan, or choose one that’s patterned and learn how to mix prints.

4. A Little Black Dress: This is an obvious essential for all too many reasons. Black is classy and the LBD is a classic. If you don’t already have one in your closet, indulge in a perfect-for-you LBD.

5. A Fun Dress: Because where’s the fun in just having an LBD? No further explanation needed.

6. A Great Winter Coat: When it’s cooler, you need a winter coat that’s going to last and keep you warm. Opt for a classic coat without fur or embellishments. A trench coat is a great buy and is perfect for cooler days. Plus, it’s a classic and will keep you looking stylish for years.

7. Dark Denim: A girl always needs dark denim in her closet. Why? Because it flatters every body type and instantly makes any outfit look a little bit more put together.

8. Ballet Flats: Sometimes, heels and sandals aren’t exactly the best shoe to wear. Purchase ballet flats – your feet will thank you.

9. The Perfect Bag: A bag that fits everything and anything you could ever need is a must.

10. Watch: Looking at your phone for the time isn’t acceptable in all situations. Invest in a watch that you’ll love to look down at as it sits on your wrist.

Update Your Look With Mixed Prints

Stop feeling like you don’t have enough clothing in your closet (because we all know you have a good amount), and mix it up.

Increase the number of potential outfits in your closet by doing something as simple as mixing prints! It may seem intimidating, but when it’s done right, it’s beautiful.

If you’re feeling a little shy about tackling this daring trend, start small. Tote around a printed handbag with your favorite printed shorts. Or mix your patterned shoes/sandals/heels with a patterned top.

The secret to mixing prints and looking great? Choose pieces (keep it at a maximum of 2) that have a common color or color scheme.

Add a neutral piece to your look to bring it all together for a cohesive, chic look. A neutral-colored jacket, scarf, simple jewelry, or a chambray top can simply pull your look together so that it doesn’t look clash-y. (See my outfit below).

Another tip is to mix bold, structured prints with light, small prints. Bold stripes and floral? Perfect. Big polka dots and a light graphic print? Yes. The combinations are endless, so look into your closet and starting mixing and matching!

Other great pairings?

  • Animal on animal. Be careful with this pair so you don’t risk looking like a walking zoo. Mix and match a bold, realistic animal print with a smaller, more artistic looking animal print.
  • Stripes and polka dots is a married pair that always looks when mixed.
  • Polka dots with anything, really.
  • Tweed (textures count!) and stripes. Mixing textures (knits, tweed, etc.) with a pattern can help balance the look.

Rebecca Minkoff Meets Denim

Your new favorite pair of jeans just hit Rebecca Minkoff’s website.

NYC designer Rebecca Minkoff has entered denim territory and oh, did she do a great job.

Rebecca Minkoff Denim is comprised of 5 jeans styles – two pairs of shorts, two skinnies, and one boyfriend – and includes two Supima cotton and modal blend tee’s, making them super soft and the perfect tee to pair with jeans.

The jeans are named after the streets of NYC: Jane Skinny Jean, Bleecker Skinny Jean, Mercer Boyfriend Jean, Perry Short, and Crosby Short. (Psst. I’m obsessed with the Bleecker Skinny Jean in “Blue Multi Print.“)

The tees, on the other hand, are named after streets in Brooklyn: Bedford Front Tail Shirt and Smith Boyfriend Pocket Tee.

The RM Denim collection is classy, chic, and perfect for any time of day:

  • For a comfort-chic look, pair the Mercer Boyfriend Jean with the Bedford Front Tail Shirt together for a happy marriage of clothing. Add pumps and your favorite statement necklace to dress it up.
  • For a night out, choose your favorite top and heels and pair it with the Bleecker Skinny Jean in blue paisley print.

The RM Denim collection is not only affordably priced (from $48 and $128), but also gives back. With every purchase from the collection, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry program, an initiative to end hunger in the United States. Shopping and doing good, I love that.

Start shopping and get your hands on some great jeans and perfect tees to pair. You can shop the RM Denim collection online at the RM Denim Shop and in stores. And if you’re in NYC, shop the Rebecca Minkoff Denim pop-up at 96 Greene Street in NYC (June 27–July 9) which will later become Minkoff’s New York flagship.

Influenster Spring Fever VoxBox

I am really excited to announce that I received an Influenster VoxBox this month: the Spring Fever VoxBox! It was packed with great goodies that I’m excited to share with you all:

Influenster Spring Beauty Review

NYC New York Color Applelicious Glossy Lip BalmIf I had to choose one thing I absolutely love from this VoxBox, it would be the NYC Applelicious Glossy Lip Balm. Not only is the lip balm itself super cute with an apple in the middle (see picture below) but it glides on smoothly and feels great on my lips! It also adds a perfect tint of color – a very light pinkish red – that is the perfect complement to my skin tone (I’ll be publishing an outfit post soon with this on my lips so you can see!).

Even better is that the apple is filled with Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, and Avocado Oil for ultra smooth lips. For $2.99, this is a great steal!

NYC Applelicious Lip Balm

Broadway Nails imPRESS Press-On Manicure: As much as I would love to try out these nails, they’re unfortunately a little bit wider than my small nails are.

Secret Outlast Clear Gel Antiperspirant/Deodorant: While I’m not a fan of the wet feeling as you glide on the deodorant, this deodorant does what it states it does: “48 hour odor and wetness protection.” I may just go out and buy myself the full-size version of this product once I finish the sample.

Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS GelasticThis product claims to be an “ultra strong flex gel” that will help your style last throughout the day. I have yet to test this product, but will be reviewing it soon!

The Tastykake Kandy Bar Kakes: A candy bar made into a cake, what could be better? I received the S’mores flavor which was surprisingly pretty good! It really did taste similar to s’mores and wasn’t as sweet as I was expecting it to be, which was great.  However, it was a little bit dry. This product is currently only available throughout the East Coast and South East.

influensterHave you ever tried any of these products? What did you think of them?

Disclaimer: I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. Other than the products received, I am not compensated in any way. The opinions in this post are honest and entirely my own.

The Style Economy

Wow, this was a tough week. There were enough great posts in the submissions to make TWO roundups… but alas, there is only room for 20. So click on, you’ll be delighted by the things you’ll learn (I particularly liked the informative post about fragrance) and the new habits you just might pick up.
